What is an Engobe?

An engobe, sometimes called a slip, is usually a coloured clay mixed with water. These slips can be used as decoration either under or on top of the glaze before firing. A good example is iron oxide mixed with the clay body. On firing it will give a green to red colour depending on the firing conditions.
